About Buckshot

MT ONE SHOTTA HEADER — “Buckshot” — is our home-raised 2022 bay stallion by Colonel C Header and out of Star Girl RG, better known around here as Bonnie.

Buckshot has been special from the beginning. He’s always had the presence, substance, and attitude that made us pay attention.

We’ve called him “Header 2.0,” and there’s a reason for that.

He carries many of the qualities we appreciated in his sire: substance, athletic ability, and a practical mind. Keeping him gives us the opportunity to carry those qualities forward through a horse we’ve raised ourselves.

Bonnie’s Influence

Buckshot’s dam, STAR GIRL RG “Bonnie”, was one of our most prized mares.

Her disposition, quality, and presence made a lasting impression on our program. We see many of those same qualities in Buckshot, which makes his place here especially meaningful.

Keeping Buckshot meant keeping both Header’s and Bonnie’s influence in our breeding program.

Those are two horses we knew, used, and appreciated—and that history matters to us.

Under Saddle & Around the Ranch

Chad typically rides Buckshot.

Ranch riding has been part of his development, giving us the opportunity to learn how he thinks, travels, and handles a job alongside our other horses.

Mike had planned to make Buckshot his ranch mount for the fall and winter of 2026. A hock injury has put those plans—and Buckshot’s riding—on hold for now.

His place in our program continues to reflect the qualities we value in a breeding horse: a mind we enjoy, the physical ability to work, and meaningful experience under saddle.

His First Foals

Buckshot had two foals in 2026:

• MT CALLIN THE SHOTS — bay AQHA filly out of LENAS REFLECTOR “Chevy-Lena”, born May 24, 2026.

• MT SHOOTIN FOR KEEPS — bay APHA colt out of DELTA DIDNT FRECKLE “Bucket”, born May 28, 2026.

Our description of those first two?

Very typey. Super thick. Super shapey.

Both came from mares that had previously been bred to Header, giving us a useful opportunity to compare the kind of foals we were getting from father and son.

Looking at Buckshot’s first two alongside two of Header’s final HQH foals, we were especially pleased with the familiar structure, bone, muscle, disposition, and overall look.

It’s a small first crop, but we couldn’t be happier with the start.

Passing the Torch

Buckshot had an awfully tough act to follow.

Header helped build the foundation of our program, and seeing his son’s first foals arrive alongside his own final HQH crop made 2026 a little bittersweet—and pretty exciting.

Our mare families are an equally important part of that story. We’ve spent years selecting both sides of these crosses with the same goals in mind.

Maybe that’s the registered cattle breeder in us. We appreciate a whole crop that looks like they belong together: familiar type, useful structure, and the kind of minds we enjoy.

Buckshot’s first two foals gave us an encouraging glimpse of that next generation.

The passing of the torch is underway.

Color Genetics

Buckshot is tested E/E and A/A.

Together, those results mean he passes the genes for a bay base color to every foal. Other color and pattern genes inherited from the mare can change the final appearance.

He cannot sire sorrel or chestnut foals. More information is available through UC Davis’s explanations of Red Factor and Agouti.

Our Stallion Philosophy

At the ranch, our stallions live and work together as part of our ranch horse string and are separated during breeding season. They are used regularly for ranch work alongside our other horses. We believe this approach helps maintain sound minds, good dispositions, and long-term usability.

We’ve always believed stallions should stay horses first—useful, rideable, and mentally sound—and that approach has worked well for us.

Buckshot currently breeds our own mares.

We would consider arranging collection for artificial insemination if there is sufficient interest, with any outside breedings offered to approved mares only.
