Our Broodmare Philosophy
VIEW OUR BROODMARES →
At Hitchcock Quarter Horses, the broodmare band is not where a mare goes because we didn’t like riding her or couldn’t think of anything else to do with her. Breeding is not a fallback job here. It is a promotion—and about as high a compliment as a mare can earn on our ranch.
Usually, our struggle is the exact opposite. By the time a mare has earned a place in our broodmare band, she is often one of the horses we least want to take out of the riding string. Then comes the hard part: deciding when to quit keeping her all to ourselves and let her start making a few mini-mes. When one of those mares comes up open, the breeders in us are disappointed—but, if we’re honest, the riders in us may do a little happy dance at the thought of another year horseback on her.
Before we ask a mare to raise the next generation, we want to know who she is. We expect meaningful time under saddle and proof of her ability, rideability, and willingness—whether that experience came from our ranch, the show pen, or a previous program. Most of our mares have also been used in ranch work, where cattle, long days, and changing country reveal far more than a pedigree alone.
We want mares we enjoy catching, riding, and being around—the ones we would gladly make another one of. They need good feet, solid bone, useful size, correct structure, and enough athletic ability to do a job. Once they enter the broodmare band, the job changes, but the standard does not. They must also be sensible, attentive mothers who milk well and raise strong, healthy foals.
The stallions may get more attention, but the mares are the foundation. Maybe it is the registered cattle breeder in us, but we think in mare families and generations. We watch what a mare produces, retain daughters from the ones we believe in, and repeat crosses that work instead of chasing something different just for the sake of different. Pedigree helps us plan the cross. The mare herself—and the foals she raises—are what prove it.
Our favorite outcome is still the same: looking at a foal and saying, “But we don’t WANT to sell that one.”
