Our Program Philosophy
VIEW OUR PROGRAM HORSES →
This is the proving ground at Hitchcock Quarter Horses.
Our program horses include young prospects, horses earning their keep in the ranch string, and potential future breeding horses. They are not finished products, and we do not expect them to be. We spend time building trust long before they are asked to do a job, then add responsibility with purpose and at a pace that fits the individual horse.
Pedigree tells us what might be there. Work tells us what actually is. Ranch work shows us how a horse travels and holds up, how it thinks when the day gets long, how it handles pressure and new situations, and whether it stays honest when things are not easy. That is where potential starts becoming proof.
One of our oldest rules is, “If any one of us can’t ride it, we don’t keep it.” That does not mean every young horse must be a finished family horse before its time. It means talent never gets a free pass. As they mature, our horses must show the mind, honesty, and trainability to become the kind of partner we trust with the people we love most.
Not every horse stays, and not every horse needs the same job. Part of our job is giving them enough time and experience to show us where they fit best. Some earn a permanent place in our ranch string or breeding program. Others may become available because our needs change or because their best fit is somewhere else. Either way, they are brought along with the same goal: to become sound, useful, good-minded horses prepared to go to work.
The young mares we hope to keep are working on their résumés. The stallion prospects are, too. Around here, a place in the breeding program is earned one ride, one job, and one good decision at a time.
