A stallion doesn’t get a separate rulebook at Hitchcock Quarter Horses.
The stallions working here on the ranch are expected to live and work like the rest of our horses—as part of the ranch string, with a job to do and manners to maintain. Outside of breeding season, they live together. When it is time to cover mares, they move into their own breeding groups. Even then, we pull them out for a few “mid-term exams.” A breeding pasture is no excuse for forgetting how to be a good citizen.
We enjoy seeing our stallions succeed in the arena, but that never replaces ranch usefulness. No matter what he accomplishes in the show pen, he still has to come home, go to work, and earn his keep.
We appreciate a stallion with presence. We’re suckers for a big hip and a horse that makes you look twice. But good looks have to come with good feet, solid bone, useful size, athletic ability, and a kind, willing mind. He should be built to hold up, pleasant to handle, and useful under saddle. We study pedigrees and value proven performance genetics, but the paper still has to match the horse standing in front of us.
Choosing a stallion always starts with the mares—their strengths, the families we are building, and what the program needs next. His job is bigger than producing one standout foal. He needs to bring as much to the cross as the mare does and help us raise useful sons, daughters we would be proud to keep, and an entire foal crop with the structure, disposition, and usability we want Hitchcock Quarter Horses known for.
Header set that bar. He is retired from our breeding program, but his influence remains in the daughters we kept and the foundation he helped build. The stallions that follow him have a high standard to meet—and that is exactly the way we want it.
