About Spur

MT PROMISE THE NIGHT, better known as “Spur,” is a 2024 APHA gelding by A ROYAL STAR DR “Roy” and out of our proven mare Delta Didnt Freckle “Bucket.”

Spur is currently in training for 60 days, and we are offering him for sale while he continues to get more rides and experience. We have included longer, minimally edited training videos on this page so prospective buyers can see where he is honestly in the process — not just a polished highlight reel.

So far, Spur is showing us a lot of what we hoped to see from this cross. He is athletic and quick-footed, wants a job, and seems to enjoy having something to do. He is still a young horse early in his training, but we really like the direction he is headed.

Bred to Work

If Spur follows the horses behind him, we expect him to be double tough.

His dam, Bucket, is one of the grittiest and most athletic mares in our broodmare band. She is quick, responsive, naturally cowy, and has always been the kind of horse that would rather have a job than stand around looking pretty. She has proven herself extensively under saddle and on the ranch.

His sire, Roy, is a confident, sure-footed, go-all-day type with plenty of cow and a pedigree that includes Grays Starlight, Smart Little Lena and Autumn Boon.

That combination is why we have high expectations for Spur as a useful ranch gelding.

His Story

Spur was raised here at Hitchcock Quarter Horses and sold as a weanling. When his owner’s health later declined and he felt that having a young horse was no longer going to be the best fit, we were given the opportunity to buy Spur back.

We were happy to bring him home.

Now he is getting the foundation we want on a young horse, and we are looking for the right person to continue with him.

Where He Goes From Here

Our plan is to market Spur while he finishes his 60 days of training.

If he comes home before he sells, he will go straight into the ranch string and start getting used. And, if we are being completely honest, that is exactly how we end up getting ourselves into trouble — because once we start riding one and liking him, it gets a whole lot harder to let him go.

We don’t keep ranch geldings, so we’d really rather find Spur the right home before we fall in love with riding him.

Spur is still young and still learning, but for someone looking for an athletic, quick-footed gelding with proven, usable horses behind him and plenty of potential ahead of him, we think he is well worth watching.
