About Shady

MT STARCHEX COLONEL — “Shady” — is a 2020 bay mare we bred and raised, by Colonel C Header and out of Star Girl RG “Bonnie.”

Shady was Mike’s pick of the fillies as a baby. We’d already kept her full sister from the year before, and we planned to keep Shady, too.

That decision has worked out pretty well.

She’s grown into a big, balanced mare with plenty of eye appeal—and the kind of personality that makes us appreciate this cross all over again.

Dillion’s Favorite

Shady is Dillion’s favorite to ride.

Considering how many horses he has to choose from around here, that says quite a bit.

Dillion has had a little competition for her, too. His daughter once informed her daddy that Shady was HER horse.

She’s typical of what we love about the Header × Bonnie cross: affectionate, laid-back, willing, and thoughtful about the person on her back. We appreciate the way she looks after her rider.

And yes… she’s a lovebug.

At 15.2 hands, there’s quite a bit of her to love.

We’ve called Shady a once-in-a-lifetime horse, and we’re proud to say we raised her. Getting to know her as a riding horse has given us plenty of reasons to feel that way.

A Ranch Horse First

We’ve used Shady as a ranch horse, giving us the opportunity to know her beyond her papers and pasture pictures.

In September 2023, she was also one of the home-raised mares we brought to the 406 Arena for ranch horse versatility, alongside Fancy and Sexy.

Those outings are part of her story. So is the everyday riding—and having a horse Dillion keeps picking as his favorite.

Her size and good looks catch people’s attention, but we’ve had the chance to appreciate her willingness and disposition under saddle, too.

Our Broodmare Philosophy

We value willing minds, ability, and everyday usability in the mares we keep. Time under saddle helps us decide which ones we want to build around.

Shady has earned our confidence as a riding horse. Her kind disposition, willingness, and the way she gets along with her rider are qualities we hope to carry into the next generation.

Looking Ahead

Shady is expecting her first foal in 2027, by MAKIN MONEY MOVVES “Money.”

We’re looking forward to seeing this Header × Bonnie daughter begin her own chapter as a broodmare.

Her life here started as Mike’s pick of the 2020 fillies. She’s grown into Dillion’s favorite riding horse.

Now we get to look forward to meeting her first baby.
