Tagline

A once-in-a-lifetime kind of mare — the kind you don’t fully understand the impact of until you start riding her daughters.

About Holly

Some horses you like.
Some horses you respect.

And every once in a while… you get one that becomes part of your family.

Holly was that kind.

The first thing I noticed about her was her eyes — big, soft, kind brown eyes that made you feel like she was looking right at you, not through you. Like she wanted to be part of whatever you were doing.

The first thing Ally noticed?
“She’s a ROAN, Dad!”

And that pretty well set the tone for how the whole thing was going to go.

We had gone to Painted Horseshoe Ranch with a plan — Mike and Chad were there to look at and buy All Star Starlite. That was the mission. Holly wasn’t even on the radar.

But while they were busy looking at Dynamite, Ally and I had found Holly.

Ally was completely taken with her — the color, the presence, everything about her — and she did everything she could to convince Mike that we needed to bring her home too.

He wasn’t having it. One horse was the plan.

So we left with Dynamite.

But the whole drive home, Holly stuck with us… and especially with Ally.

At one point I looked over at Mike and said,
“I can’t believe you told her no.”

That was all it took.

Before we ever made it home, Mike had picked up the phone, called Neal Bouma back, and bought Ally her roan horse.

And that decision ended up shaping our program in ways we couldn’t have known at the time.

The Kind You Build Around

Holly was a big, solid mare — about 15.2 hands.
Built with the kind of structure and mind that made her easy to use and easy to trust.

She was Ally’s main ranch horse for a long time.
The kind you grab without thinking twice. The kind that could go do a job, handle pressure, and come back the same horse every time.

She was as “been there, done that” as they come.

She got along with everyone — people and horses alike. No drama, no nonsense. Just steady, kind, and dependable.

Well… mostly.

Because if you knew Holly, you also knew she was absolutely convinced she was a person.

She didn’t just want to be around you — she wanted to be involved.

Especially if food was involved.

Lunch didn’t exist unless she was included.

If Ally had a sandwich, Holly had a sandwich.

She had more personality than most people.

Pedigree Highlights

Holly is by All Starlight, a son of Grays Starlight — a line we’ve come to value for producing horses with cow sense, athletic ability, and good, trainable minds.

We’ve owned multiple granddaughters of Grays Starlight over the years, and for a long time, we didn’t think they made mares much better than that group.

Until we started riding their daughters.

What She Produced

If Holly had only been a good ranch horse, she still would’ve been worth owning.

But what she produced is what made her truly special.

Her daughters consistently come with:
• Gentle, people-oriented dispositions
• Willing, trainable minds
• Natural cow sense
• Personality — plenty of it
• And the ability to go be useful

They are easy to start, easy to be around, and naturally capable when it comes time to go to work.

A Mare That Made a Mark

We have retained every one of Holly’s daughters.

That’s not something we say lightly — and it’s probably the clearest reflection of what we think of her as a producer.

Those daughters have gone on to prove themselves under saddle, and in many cases, they’ve exceeded our expectations.

She didn’t just raise good foals.
She raised the kind you want more of.

Our Broodmare Philosophy

Our broodmares are expected to be broke to ride with real, proven time under saddle. That experience may come from our ranch program, previous owners, or performance training — but they must demonstrate rideability, willingness, and real-world usability.

We’ve put miles on our mares in real country — gathering, working cattle, long days, changing ground — so we know exactly what they’re like when it matters.

They have to meet the same standard as everything else here:
usable, good-minded, and built to last.

Holly checked every one of those boxes.

And more importantly — she passed them on.

Legacy

Holly is no longer with us, but she is still very much a part of this program.

You see her in her daughters — in the way they think, the way they handle themselves, and the way they go about a job.

And every time we swing a leg over one of them, we’re reminded just how right we were to turn around and go back for that roan mare.
