Producer Note:

Princess produced the kind of foals we strive for — correct, capable, and full of personality. Her influence continues in our program through the offspring we’ve retained.

A mare we admired long before we ever owned her — and one that left a lasting mark on our program.

About Princess

Some mares earn their place.

Some mares are remembered long before they ever become yours.

Princess was that kind.

The One You Don’t Forget

I still remember the first time I saw her.

At the time, she wasn’t even ours. She was being ridden on the ranch and going about her job like she always had. But we were around her enough to notice.

And she was hard not to notice.

She had that look — one of the prettiest mares you’d ever lay eyes on — but it wasn’t just that. She carried herself with a certain air about her. Like she knew exactly what she was.

Confident. A little untouchable.

The kind you could look at all day…

…but maybe not one that was too interested in being fussed over.

At the time, her name was Missy.

But if you know Mike, you know he has a tendency to rename horses — whether they belong to him or not — if he thinks something fits better.

And in this case, he was right.

He started calling her “Princess.”

And it stuck.

Even though she wasn’t even our horse.

I remember looking at Mike and quietly saying,
“That mare can come live at our house someday…”

At the time, it was just one of those things you say.

You don’t really expect it to happen.

But years later, we got the opportunity to own her.

And we didn’t hesitate.

The First of the Three

Princess was the first of the three full sisters we purchased.

She’s the one that started it.

The one that made the impression.

The one that made us say,
“If we ever get the chance at another one like her… we’re taking it.”

And we did.

That decision shaped more of our program than we probably realized at the time.

A True “Princess”

Princess was exactly what her name suggests.

She was sweet.
She was sassy.
And she was just a little bit full of herself — the kind that knew exactly how pretty she was.

More Than Just Pretty

But she wasn’t just something to look at.

Princess had been used extensively on the ranch and had an exceptional handle on her. She was broke, capable, and knew her job.

She had the kind of feel and training that made her enjoyable to ride — the kind that responded, worked with you, and made things smoother instead of harder.

She was as useful as she was good-looking.

And that’s a combination we don’t take lightly.

What She Produced

Princess passed on the traits that made her stand out.

Her foals have shown:

  • Good minds
  • Correct structure
  • Trainability
  • And that same presence she carried herself with

They’re the kind that are enjoyable to be around and capable when it comes time to go to work.

And just like their dam — they don’t lack personality.

The Standard She Set

Princess set a standard for us.

The kind of mare you compare others to.

The kind you don’t second guess.

The kind that makes you say:

“Would we want another one just like her?”

Hell yes.

Our Broodmare Philosophy

For us, a mare needs to be proven before she ever earns a place in the broodmare band. That might be in the show pen, on the ranch, or before she ever got to us — but she needs to have demonstrated ability and rideability. At a minimum, she is broke to ride with meaningful time under saddle.

We’ve put real miles on our mares — gathering, working cattle, and using them in day-to-day ranch work — so we know exactly what they’re like when it matters.

They have to meet the same standard as everything else here:
usable, good-minded, and built to last.

Princess met that standard.

And helped define it.

Legacy

Princess is no longer with us, but she is not gone from this program.

She lives on in the decisions we’ve made, the mares we’ve chosen, and the direction we’ve taken.

She was the beginning of something important for us.

And she’s a big part of why this program looks the way it does today.
