About Header

They just don’t make horses like Header every day.

Honestly… they may only make one like him in a lifetime.

COLONEL C HEADER — “Header” — is our 2002 bay foundation stallion by Colonel Clout and out of Shady Boon Bar.

He is our unicorn. The GOAT. And there is truly nothing we don’t love about him.

Header has always been the kind of horse that makes you shake your head and smile at the same time—athletic, strong, willing, smart, and steady, with a presence that fills up the pen without ever feeling overwhelming.

He gave us everything you hope a stallion will give you: ability, disposition, durability, and heart.

And he gave us plenty of reasons to want more horses just like him.

The Standard He Set

Header helped shape our expectations for what a good horse should be.

A horse can have an impressive pedigree and look the part, but we also want to enjoy living with him, handling him, and saddling him for a job.

Header gave us that combination.

His gentle nature, willingness, natural athletic ability, and steady mind became qualities we looked for in his offspring—and qualities we continue to value throughout our program.

He helped establish our belief that a stallion should remain a useful, rideable horse with a good mind and manners we can live with every day.

His Influence on Our Program

Header’s influence is still easy to find around here.

We kept his son, MT ONE SHOTTA HEADER “Buckshot,” to carry his bloodlines forward as a breeding stallion.

We have also retained many Header daughters throughout our broodmare band and riding string. They continue to give us reasons to appreciate their sire, both under saddle and as mothers raising the next generation.

Keeping those horses says a great deal about what Header has meant to us.

His chapter here as a breeding stallion has come to a close, but his influence remains part of our everyday lives—and a foundation we continue to build on.

Pedigree & Background

Header was bred and raised by L.A. Waters Quarter Horses in Texas.

He is by Colonel Clout, a son of Colonel Freckles out of Miss Pistol Lena by Doc O’Lena. His dam, Shady Boon Bar, is a daughter of Boon Bar.

Those bloodlines were part of what brought Header into our lives. Living with him and raising his offspring gave us the confidence to keep building on them.

Our continued interest in the L.A. Waters program—and the horses we have brought home from there since—owes a great deal to Header.

Our Stallion Philosophy

At the ranch, our stallions live and work together as part of our ranch horse string and are separated during breeding season. They are used regularly for ranch work alongside our other horses. We believe this approach helps maintain sound minds, good dispositions, and long-term usability.

We’ve always believed stallions should stay horses first—useful, rideable, and mentally sound—and that approach has worked well for us.

Header Went Back Home

In 2025, we made the bittersweet decision to retire Header from our breeding program.

With our stallions living on pasture year-round, we felt a warmer climate would be in his best interest as he grew older.

We gave a lot of thought to where he would spend his next chapter. This wasn’t just any horse, and we weren’t about to send him just anywhere.

We reached out to L.A. Waters Quarter Horses—the very people who raised him. We couldn’t think of a more fitting place for him to go, or anyone who would cherish and appreciate him quite like we had.

And just like that, our boy went back home.

He sure left a big hole around here. But knowing he is loved and right back where his story began makes it a whole lot easier.

His Texas Chapter

In October 2026, Wanda Waters sent an update letting us know Header was doing wonderfully.

Apparently, he is still the same sweet, easygoing gentleman we have always known and loved. Wanda said she had to hurry to take his picture because, as soon as he spotted her, he headed straight over for some attention.

Yep. That’s our Header.

And his story as a sire is still going: Wanda’s update included four mares in foal to him for 2027.

The 2026 foal crop was his final crop at Hitchcock Quarter Horses, and we’re looking forward to seeing his next babies in Texas.

Always Part of HQH

Header isn’t just a stallion to us.

He’s family.

He shaped our program, our horses, and our expectations. His influence continues through the son and daughters we retained, the horses working for their owners, and the next generation coming along.

He owes us absolutely nothing. He did his job—and then some.

We feel incredibly lucky to have had a horse like him in our lives.
